Yoga, an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India, is now practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity. Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga. Since then, International Day of Yoga has been celebrated all over the world on 21 June. The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.
To celebrate the 5th International Day of Yoga, Embassy of India, Baku, organized 12 Major Yoga events in different locations of Baku and regions like Gabala, Gobustan, Lankaran and Shamaki. The Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan extended their wholehearted support to the celebrations of the International Day of Yoga. The 5th International Day of Yoga events started with a Yoga session at the historical Maiden Tower in Icherisheher on 10th June with the active support of Icherisheher Administration of State Historical-Architechtural Reserve. The second Yoga event was held on 14 June at Gala-State Historical Ethnographic Reserve. Other Yoga events in Baku were held a Baku Boulevard on 16 June; Ateshgah Fire Temple and Baku Youth Center on 21 June; and Yanar Dagh on 23 June. The Mega Yoga event was held in the majestic Heydar Aliyev Park on the evening of 22 June.
The Executive Power of Gabala City, Lankaran and Shamaki supported and actively participated in the Yoga events held in their cities. In the Gabala City, the Yoga event was held on 15 June, which was attended by Head of the Executive Power, Mr. Sabuhi Abdullayev. A Yoga event was also held at Gobustan State Reserve on 16 June in which the Director of the Museum, Mr. Vugar Isayev participated. The Yoga event held in Lankaran City on 19 June was attended by Head of Executive Power, Mr. Taleh Qarashov. The last Yoga event of the IDY-2019 was held on 22 June in Shamaki City, which was attended by Head of Executive Power, Mr. Tahir Mammadov.
Over 2000 Yoga enthusiasts took part in the 11 Yoga events organized this year. Mr. Anar and Mrs. Sabina of Yoga Sahi Studio; Mr. Praveen Chandir and Mrs. Preeti Ullas of Soham School of Yoga; Mr. Kanan Mammadov of Art of Living; Mr. Elchin Guliyev of Shivanand Yoga conducted the Yoga Sessions.
