Rescue climbers will be charged
French authorities plan to partially or fully cover the rescue costs of the climbers.
The number of accidents in the mountains has increased, putting pressure on rescue services and exceeding the budget allocated for search and rescue operations.
According to the calculations of the French Court of Auditors, such operations involving a helicopter and special personnel cost an average of 10,780 euros, which is twice as much as 10 years ago. By 2024, French rescuers are expected to rescue around 10,000 climbers.
Experts have concluded that the current bailout system and its associated costs are unsustainable.
