Former ambassador arrested in connection with Epstein scandal

London police have arrested Peter Mandelson, the former British ambassador to the United States, whose name appeared in the documents of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

He is suspected of abuse of power.

In early February, the police opened a criminal case against Mandelson after the publication of correspondence between him and the late American financier Epstein, who was convicted as a pedophile.

London police said that "Police officers arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of dereliction of duty".

Further details about the arrest have not been released. In September, Mandelson was dismissed from the diplomatic service after the depth of his friendship with Epstein was revealed.

In early February, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer apologized to the victims of a convicted sex offender for appointing Lord Mandelson, a member of the House of Lords, as ambassador to the United States. On February 6, the house of the suspect was searched.
